70,000 down to the best 20,000 photographs

This site now only has images that have been scanned in high resolution or taken on digital cameras. These have all been sent out to other agencies and FLPA and Alamy have most of them on their sites.

Photographs found in searches should all now have a web image except for a very few that I am in the process of uploading.

I have reduced the physical number of photographs in my collection from 60 or 70,000 to about 20,000. They represent the best of the images which I have taken over the past 30 years.

Much of the machinery from early shoots is now out of date, but the organisms, the crops, livestock, pests, diseases and weeds are as relevant now as they have ever been.

In the coming months I will be scanning the remaining 8000 or so old unscanned images that I still hold and adding these back onto this website as I do. I will also take new digital images to replace or add to those that are already here.

Scanned film images can still be better than digital

We are continuing to scan 6x6cm film images from the Holt Studios files. Many of these photographs, which were taken all over the world, have never been seen or used and remain a unique record.

Much is spoken about the advantages of digital photography. Undoubtedly DSLR cameras are useful tools for making records of animals and plants and the advances in modern equipment ensures that the quality, particularly in some close ups, is excellent and hard to equal.

However, there are certain subjects where the quality of a film image exceeds one made on a DSLR camera and this is particularly true of views where there is a lot of information and a large scanned film image can retain landscape or crop detail which is lost in an interpolated digital record.

So compare carefully and see that the difference between medium and small format still exists and, until high end digital cameras become more commonplace, a good film image can still exceed the quality of even the most advanced DSLR.

Both digital originals and scanned transparencies are shown on the website.
